Description
B2B platform that connects salon, spa, and barbershop owners to individual stylists to fill their unused salon space on demand for an affordable space to work without having to sign a long-term contract or work by commission.
context
We approached this task by reimagining every salon and barbershop owner not just as a business owner but also as an entrepreneur. Simultaneously, we recognized every beauty professional as an entrepreneur in their own right. This holistic perspective transformed ShearShare into more than just a booking tool; it became a comprehensive business solution tailored to the unique needs of both salon owners and beauty professionals alike. By bridging the gap between workspace provision and entrepreneurial empowerment, ShearShare emerged as an indispensable asset within the dynamic landscape of the beauty industry.
With the re-launch of the product, ShearShare raised $5.5+ million in venture capital fund and expanded to 900 cities, 50,000 users and a 4.5 rating on Google Play.
Challenge

How might we reimagine an online marketplace that connects salon & barbershop owners who want to rent out their space with beauty professionals looking for the space and freedom to work in specific locales?

Reserach Insights & Guiding Principles

After conducting user research via interviews and usage recordings on the beta app, it became evident that ShearShare revolves around four main cornerstones.

Building Trust

Beauty professionals rely on trust that the spaces they rent meet and surpass their expectations, providing an environment conducive to their best work. In turn, hosts trust that stylists will uphold professionalism and respect towards the salon, space, and other individuals. And ultimately all users trust that ShearShare will support them proactively in any unfavorable situations, demonstrating a commitment to their well-being and success.

Experienced Care

Users love that ShearShare creates a supportive, "white glove" experience for everyone, where human support is accessible and compassionate. This "Experienced Care" can show through the thoughtfulness of the design experience, ensuring the app itself is never a source of frustration.

Maximizer

ShearShare users need it to be efficient and effective, enabling users to complete their work with support but without fuss. And they to see value from ShearShare early on and often to continue coming back.

Swift Communication

Hosts and beauty professionals work from calendars and time moves quick. To make the most of their time and get them quick wins, ShearShare needs to prioritize clear, quick communication to keep things moving – in everything from UI copy to the more detailed design of messaging.

booking

Now that our Beauty Professional has found where they want to work, we want it to be as easy as possible to submit a booking request. Stylist should be able to methodically move through the steps, and after they've gone through it once, and added the requisite information, every subsequent booking flow should be much faster for them. When a Stylist is missing something or made a mistake, they should know exactly what went wrong and how they can fix it. Finally, when our Stylist successfully submits a request, we want them to feel confident in what comes next.

REservation Managment

The Hosts and Stylists come together during the Booking Request phase to determine that this is a good fit for each of them. Each person is usually willing to work with the other – especially if either or both parties are excited about each other. As soon as a request like that is accepted, each person is thinking about their list of things to do for the experience to go well for them and the end clients.

Onboarding

Onboarding accomplish two things. 1. Help the Hosts and Beauty Professionals solve challenges they face in their work, or perhaps just make something they already do much easier. So a swift onboarding experience that gather’s all necessary information to empower thier workflow is important. 2. Users can come to ShearShare with all sorts of existing information and context on the app, or hardly any at all. Onboarding content and processes need to account for people at all levels of interest, knowledge of, and investment in ShearShare.

Inbox and Messaging

Communication is the foundation on which successful relationships, and successful ShearShare experiences, are built. Both types of users operate their business through calendars, and time moves quick when you're busy. In an ideal world, communication is limited because Beauty Professionals can find answers to their questions elsewhere, the Hosts take action on requests quickly, and the platform does the work in between. In the real world, people will miss or want to confirm things, they will request special treatment or times from Hosts, they will ask to go off-platform, they will ask for contact information, to see the space before booking, and so many other things. We design towards the ideal world, but acknowledge and support the real world use cases.Ultimately, the goal of messaging is to move people to the next step in the ShearShare process – from sending a request to acting on a request, getting ready for the day-of-rental experience, and addressing any post-rental follow-up.

Rebrand and Design system

In addition to focusing on the product itself, this project formed an integral component of a comprehensive rebranding and redesign initiative for their marketing site. The collaborative efforts of a cross-functional team enabled us to continuously refine the design system, ensuring it effectively communicated a unified brand narrative. This system encompassed foundational elements such as colors, typography, and grid systems, alongside interactive components like buttons, cards, and date pickers. Designed for flexibility, the system can undergo continuous iteration and enhancement as ShearShare expands and adapts to evolving accessibility standards.
